Home Health Check
If you live in the state of PA and own a car, an annual state inspection is required to ensure the vehicle is maintained and safe to operate. Surprisingly, there are no regulations (even from insurance companies) that require any such periodic review of your home. Most of our homes are anywhere from 10 to 20x the cost of our vehicle. Why wouldn’t we want that same sort of care?
We are all trying to avoid being saddled with expensive home repairs. To prevent yourself from an inconvenient surprise, or worse, an unplanned issue that jeopardizes the safety of your family, we recommend getting a Home Health Check (also known as a Maintenance Inspection) twice a year.
Introducing the Home Health Check.
A home health check is a regular checkup for your home. It involves hiring a qualified professional to check the condition of your home to identify areas for preventative action or to stop a current issue from getting larger and/or more dangerous for your family.
A typical home health check includes:
Smoke detector testing, battery change
Carbon Monoxide testing, battery change
HVAC safety check, age review & filter change
Sump testing and evaluation
Roof system evaluation
Gutter system evaluation
Plumbing evaluation
Electrical evaluation
GFCI testing
Attic evaluation
Check dryer vent
Assess door seals for proper placement and/or replacement
Clean dishwasher and run with vinegar to remove mineral deposits
Insect evaluation to review for conducive conditions and/or actual damage that insects have caused.
Window evaluation
Deck safety review
Water management evaluation
Again, you can think of this checkup similar to what you do with your car or even your annual physical at the doctor. Preventative maintenance is the best plan of action to protect your assets and the health and safety of you and your loved ones.
Why do I need a Home Health Check?
So we might seem kind of biased… especially since some of us are also Home Inspectors and we are passionate about care for your home. However, keeping up with routine maintenance is essential to maintaining your home’s condition.
Our Home Health Check is preventative, meaning the service protects your home from developing larger issues. $10,000 foundation issues don’t just develop overnight (in normal circumstances). The key is to find the issues before they become big, expensive headaches.
It’s not just the financial aspect, though. There’s safety to consider, especially if there’s something wrong with the electric or smoke detectors not working. Almost three out of five home fire deaths were caused by fires in properties with no smoke alarms (41%) or smoke alarms that failed to operate (16%). (NFPA)
