How to Maintain and Replace Exterior Door Seals

Without a doubt, one of the easiest ways to save big on time, expenses, and inconveniences as a homeowner is to maintain the seals in the entrances to your home.

Pests, energy waste, water damage, or any number of other reasons can be the fault of improperly installed or missing door seals. Maintaining them on the reg can be beneficial to you in ways you probably would have never imagined. And it only takes a few minutes from your day.

Starting with the largest perpetrator, your garage door has seals just like the rest of them. Inspecting the seal from top to bottom on either side, as well as the ground seal. The bottom corners are especially important to keep in good shape as that is where many pests will scurry inside. If anywhere the seal comes away from the door, has been chewed at, or looks down right worn and brittle, it’s time to replace them. These should slip out with ease and can be taken to your local garage door company or hardware store to purchase replacements or repairs.

Moving on to the main doors into the home, the same inspections should be conducted. Inspect all of the perimeters between the door and the frame itself. A storm door is always a good idea to have in front of the main doors to your home as another layer of protection from the elements. Heat loss is a huge cost to homes that don’t have properly sealed and reinforced entrances as well as water damage to snow or rain that can get up under the door and seep into the wood.

Replacing door seals to the home should also be a breeze; simply pinch the seal closest to the frame and gently pull to remove from the track. Save the old seal to properly measure the new one and cut to size. Slide the new seals into the crevice in the door frame and push to lock into place. Complete these inspections on all entrances to your home, both front, back, and sides and stop letting your money slide out the door.
